Twenty-five delegates represented Indiana at the LWV National Convention in Columbus, Ohio, June 25-28. While recognizing the tasks before us leading up to the General Election in November, organizers and session leaders energized us and armed us with strategies for action. We adopted our2026-2028 program, Defending a Democracy Under Siege, which will include Voting Rights, Protecting Elections, Redistricting, Immigration, Individual Rights, and the Presidency. See Convention actions HERE and a list of resolutions HERE.

PRESIDENTS DAY SATURDAY AUGUST 1

Location: Carmel Clay Main Library, 425 E Main St, Carmel, IN
Deadline to register is July 24

Anticipating all that we have to do before the election in November, we moved it up on the calendar and look forward to seeing many of you on August 1. You need not be in local leadership to attend! If you want to be involved in local efforts to get out the vote and election protection, go HERE or more information and to register.

Each League will have two minutes to highlight one accomplishment, so handouts would be welcome. For example, LWV Brown County has provided media watchers for elections and a primary report to the election board as well as an article, https://bcdemocrat.com/2026/07/03/letter-to-the-editor-ensuring-trust-and-transparency-the-role-of-election-watchers/ for their local weekly newspaper, the Brown County Democrat.

On Elbridge Gerry’s birthday, Rally Against Mid-Decade Redistricting.

Join us at the Statehouse at noon to let our legislators know our opposition to new maps remains strong.

We’re launching a petition next week to be delivered on Organization Day in November, so be on the alert for the opportunity to sign!

According to The Fulcrum - Leveraging Our Differences, a platform where insiders and outsiders to politics are informed, meet, talk, and act to repair our democracy and make it live and work in our everyday lives, In Indiana, Three Organizations Push Back Against Barriers to Democracy. The three are the League of Women Voters of Indiana, Common Cause Indiana, and the Indiana Bar Association.

The Fulcrum has done videos covering all fifty states, inviting them to talk about their actions to preserve Democracy. You can watch the Indiana episode HERE.

Our ballots in November will include a constitutional amendment that if approved by voters would change Indiana’s Constitution to allow bail to be denied not only in murder or treason cases, but also when the state shows that the accused poses “a substantial risk to any other person or the community” and that no release conditions would reasonably protect public safety.

See why the ACLU is opposed: Constitutional Bail Amendment.

The vote sheet for the ballot measure is HERE.
