What is Election Protection?

Election Protection is a national nonpartisan voter protection coalition that strives to ensure every eligible voter can cast their ballot on Election Day. The coalition is led by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and works year-round with a wide range of tools and activities. Common Cause Indiana organizes the Indiana field program, which

  • publicizes the 866-OUR-VOTE hotline and
  • organizes and trains both voter advocates, who offer assistance outside polling places to people who have questions or encounter problems voting, and roving monitors, who check polling places for lines and other issues.

How is the League Involved?

The League encourages election observation to help ensure that all voters can exercise their right to vote, gather information about what works and doesn’t work, engage volunteers, and enhance visibility. In addition to offering its own election observation toolkit, LWV United States is one of 300 national Election Protection partners and promotes use of the national 866-OUR-VOTE hotline for voters who have questions or are being prohibited from casting a vote. LWV Indiana encourages local Leagues to participate in the Election Protection program organized by Common Cause Indiana and offers support to help make that happen.

Ways to Participate

Each local League has its own local priorities, strengths, and challenges, and LWV Indiana supports local Leagues that wish to participate in Election Protection in one or more of these ways:

  • Assist voters in your community with voter advocates outside polling places and/or roving poll monitors, with training and support from Common Cause Indiana and the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee and some League-specific tools from LWV Indiana.
  • Place Election Protection signs in permissible areas near polling places the day before the General Election and remove them the day after.
  • Publicize the Election Protection hotline by distributing materials during your pre-election activities and events, sharing/posting information on League websites and social media, etc.
